“一词多义”是英语比较让人头疼的现象,很多单词看起来比较熟悉,但是放在上下文语境中,根本讲不通(it doesn’t make sense!)比如口语中说“He really goes nuts! ”what? 他去坚果了?其实这句话的意思是“他真是疯了”这个地方的nuts是发疯的意思,柯林斯词典的注释:If you say that someone goes nuts or is nuts, you mean that they go crazy or are very foolish。是不是很坑爹。这种我们熟悉的单词却有不太熟悉的意思(熟词僻义)在托福和雅思当中还是很常见的,有些甚至是一些题目的考点,如果对这些单词的意思不熟悉,会给我们的阅读造成很大的障碍。
例如剑桥雅思7test4 passage3文章中的一句话:
Subjects reported finding the predictable and unpredictable noise equally annoying, and all subjects performed at about the same level during the noise portion of the experiments. 我们常见的subject是“学科”的意思,但此处带入原文明显不合逻辑,此处subject的意思是“实验对象,研究对象”的意思(In an experiment or piece of research, the subject is the person or animal that is being tested or studied.)句子的意思是“受试对象报告可以预测的噪音和不可预测的噪音同样让人讨厌,所有受试对象在实验有噪音的部分表现水平基本一致”。本期老师总结了一些托福和雅思当中常见的“熟词僻义”单词,在阅读和听力中遇到时要多多留神。
1.Accommodate 熟义:住宿; 僻义:容纳(If a building or space can accommodate someone or something, it has enough room for them.)
例句:The hall is large enough to accommodate 400 people
2.Address 熟义: 地址,僻义:解决,处理 (think about and begin to deal with an issue or a problem)
例句:A fundamental problem has still to be addressed
3.Article 熟义: 文章; 僻义:物品(a particular item or object, typically one of a specified type)/ 条款,条文 (a separate clause or paragraph of a legal document or agreement, typically one outlining a single rule or regulation)
例句1:She took a few articles of clothing with her
例句2:Article1 of constitution guarantees freedom of speech.
4.Assume 熟义:假设; 僻义:1. 接受(权利或责任)(to start to have control, responsibility or start in a particular position or job)2. 呈现出,显示出(to start to have a particular quality or appearance)
例句1:Jim Paton will assume the role of managing director
例句2:These relationships assume great importance in times of crisis.
5.Account 熟义:账户; 僻义:1.描述(a written or spoken description that says what happens in an event or process)2. 解释,说明(to give a satisfactory explanation of why something happened or why you did something)
例句1:He was too shocked to give an account of what happened
例句2:Can you account for your movements on that night?
6.Bill 熟义:账单; 僻义:议案,法案(a written proposal for a new law, that is brought to a parliament so that it can be discussed)
例句:The house of representatives passed a new gun-control law.
7.Channel 熟义:海峡; 僻义:导向,引导 (to control and direct something such as money or energy towards a particular purpose)
例句:Most of his energy was channeled into writing and lecturing.
8.Coin 熟义:硬币; 僻义:创造(if you coin a word or a phrase, you are the first person to say it )
例句:Jaron Lanier coined the term “virtual reality” and pioneered its early development.
9.Certain 熟义:肯定,确信; 僻义:某些(one particular thing, person or group)
例句:You owe certain person a sum of money
10.Cause 熟义:原因; 僻义:奋斗目标,事业(a cause is an aim or principle which a group of people supports or is fighting for)
例句:He devoted his whole life to the cause of education.
