英语中不少短语是和开车有关，例如backseat driver，take a back seat，put the brakes on Brake等等。原意都是与开车有关的意思，后来引申出其它含义。

几年总能在网上看到“老司机”、“开车”这样的词，已经成为日常用语的一部分了。各位也是学英语的老司机了，但你们知道其实英语中很多词也是和开车有关的吗（当然这个车是真车）？

众所周知，在欧美国家，人们出行时常常是依赖私家车的。这点也很自然的反应在了语言当中，不少的短语都是和开车有关的。

1.backseat driver

首先就是backseat driver, 也可以拼写成back seat driver 或者back-seat driver。

A backseat diver is an annoying passenger who gives unwanted and/or unneeded driver. He issues lots of instructions, gives lots of advice, even criticizes driver’s driving skills but doesn’t do a bit of work.

(后座驾驶员就是总给司机提没用建议的、烦人的乘客。会给出很多指令，提建议，甚至批评司机的驾驶技术，但实际上任何实事都没干。)

估计任何开车的人都对这种人深恶痛绝吧。

这个词很快成为了日常用语，之后它还扩大了使用范围，it means trying to give unwanted advice or control something that is supposed to be controlled by another people, or lecture others how to do something that is not his business. 泛指对别人的事情指手画脚，横加干涉。

e.g. Stop being such a backseat driver! That is none of your business!!!

2.take a back seat

另外一个和backseat driver很像的时take a back seat.

虽然它们看起来很像，但是意思是相反的，它指的是愿意坐在后座上让司机安心开车

引申出去就是be willing to occupy an inferior position and allow another to be in control（允许他人取得主控地位，退居幕后/二线）。

e.g. she was happy to take a back seat and give someone else the opportunities to manage the project.

3.put the brakes on Brake

本义是刹车，这个词对于大家来说估计都很熟悉了。老司机开始就喜欢上高速，有时还超速了，那就得赶紧刹车，使车速慢下来。

后来它的使用范围变广，泛指使某件事情或者活动的进程慢下来（to slow, impede or stop someone’s or something’s progress or activities）。

e.g. the recent economic downturn put the brakes on the government’s plans for redeveloping the region’s transportation system.

4.U turn

老司机哪怕对于路况再熟悉，也是可能会走错路的。这个时候就需要就要调头回到原来的地方。U turn本义指的就是180°的一个大拐弯，快速调转到相反的方向。

后来，它引申指任何观点、政策、趋势等方面突然的、剧烈的改变（any sudden and drastic reversal, as of opinion, policy, intention, fortune, trend, etc.）

e.g. the disastrous unveiling of the tech giant’s latest gadget marks a major U-turn in their otherwise unyielding success.

5.down the road

开车都是要沿着路开的，这个词本身就是指“沿着路”的意思

e.g. a huge truck roared down the road(一部大卡车轰隆隆地驶过马路)。

这个词引申出去，指的是“在未来”.

e.g. I do want to get married, but down the road, not any time soon.
